New York celebrity criminal defense attorney Mel Sachs dies

Star criminal defense attorney Mel Sachs, who represented Mike Tyson, Lil' Kim and the New York Yankees and won civil cases against international corporate giants including Avon International Inc., has died.

Sachs died Wednesday, said Robin Aronson, who works at his office. She did not give his age or details on the cause of death.

Sachs, who was born in 1946, had two children and was married to Grace Sachs.

Widely regarded as one of the nation's premier trial lawyers, Sachs seemed a throwback to the 1930s, with his trademark custom tailored English-fabric suits: three-piece, double-breasted, pleated, complete with vests and watch pockets. He usually stepped into court with a starched white pocket square, hand-tied bow tie and horn-rimmed glasses on a chain around his neck. He was known for sweeping oration.

Sachs was attached to myriad big-name cases, even if his clients lost. He recently represented New Jersey musicians taking on well-known rappers Ludacris and Kanye West in a copyright infringement case, but the jury concluded that the rappers did not copy his clients' work.
